A native of Spain, Jose Arpa was a leading figure in the early San Antonio art community. He was one of the city’s most influential artists in the early twentieth century, but he also frequently traveled to Big Bend and the Davis Mountains and painted many scenes such as this one, utilizing a surprisingly modern realistic style.
